Back 2 HipHop Pick: Geto Boys- My Mind Is Playing Tricks On Me

"Day by day it's more impossible to cope
I feel like I'm the one that's doing dope
Can't keep a steady hand because I'm nervous
Every sunday morning I'm in service
Praying for forgiveness
And trying to find an exit out of the business"

"Diggin' In the Crates" Artist Spotlight: Curtis Mayfield

"Add a little sugar, honey suckle and
A great big expression of happiness
Boy you couldn't miss
With a dozen roses
Such would astound you
The joy of children laughing around you
These are the makings of you, it is true
The makings of you"

~Curtis Mayfield {The Makings of You}

Why is music important to you?
Music is important because it allows me to get away and even serves as some sort of therapy. Music comes in so many different forms; it has the ability to bring to surface so many feelings, moods, and memories whether good or bad.

Top 3 songs:
Summer Time, I smile, and Nothing even matters

Top 3 favorite music artists
Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, and Luther Vandross

Top 5 albums
In no particular order: Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Unpredictable, Dangerously in Love, God’s Property, New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh

Keeping real music alive for me is simple by keeping music in rotation, and sharing it with others.

Artist on The Rise Spotlight: Nneka

In an effort to "KEEP REAL MUSIC ALIVE", I occasionally like to highlight new, up and coming artist who don't get much exposure as they deserve.  Nneka is an artist that I've been following for some time now and I had to share with you guys. Her style of music is very truthful, political and even raw. She kinda gives me that Marvin Gaye "Whats Goin On" album feel when I listen to her songs. She sings of such harsh topics about this world in such a light and beautiful voice. You can't listen to an artist like Nneka and not want to stand for a cause. Check out this mini-doc called "Who Is Nneka" to learn more about this talented artist on the rise!

One of my favorite songs of hers is, "Come With Me"...Check it out below!

Aaliyah: What's Your Favorite?

"living up to the stage, I got jazz personality, G mentality, beats of soul train"
-Aaliyah (Back & Forth)

Growing up, Aaliyah was the girl I wanted to be like. She had a cool, laid back, jazzy like style and I often times would try to imitate her, lol. Simply put, she was my favorite singer as a young girl. Every time I hear her song on the radio these days I can't help but think...when is her next album coming out...but then I catch myself and just remain thankful for the music she was able to put out in her 22 years of living. It's crazy but without Aaliyah, I would probably be a totally different person...I mean who else would I have tried to be like, I wonder. Anyway, I just wanted to do a small tribute the beautiful Aaliyah "Baby Girl" Haughton. You will ALWAYS be missed.

Check out my top 5 favorite Aaliyah songs below, and also please share your Aaliyah favorites.

Jam of the Day: Cherrelle- Saturday Love

Battle of the 90's Girl Bands: SWV | TLC | En Vogue

The Sisters With Voices
The Crazy, Sexy and Cool Ones

The Funky Fly Divas
90's was the last decade of good music in my eyes. We had New Jack Swing, Babyface written jams and the flyest R&B groups! Some of the top music groups in that time period were ruled by the ladies. SWV, En Vogue and TLC ruled the charts, and created the best hits that even now we still love to jam. My question to you today is, of these top 3 girl groups, which was your favorite? Check out their hits below to jog your memory! Cast your vote on this weeks poll (located at the top right corner of the site).

Back 2 HipHop Pick: De La Soul- Me, Myself & I

Put On Yo' Record: Stephen G. Brown

Stephen G. Brown: Sr. Pastor of Greater Bethlehem Baptist Church

Why is music important to you?
Music has been in the background of my life for as long as I can remember. From Earth, Wind & Fire to Stevie Wonder, there has never been a time when a certain song doesn't evoke a mood or memory. Spiritually speaking, music has allowed me to engage the Lord in a way that is intimate and life-changing! Music moves...

Top 3 Favorite Songs:
Stevie Wonder "Love's in need of love!", Luther Vandross "If Only for One Night", Fred Hammond "Give me a clean heart."

Top 3 Favorite Music Artist:
Prince, Rakim, Stevie Wonder

Top 5 Albums:
1999, Paid in Full, Rapture (Anita Baker), September (EWF), Songs in the Key of Life.
How do you keep real music alive?
My iPod is always with me...I rarely listen to the radio, because I believe that we have lost our musical integrity and talent in recent years. Hip Hop is the greatest victim of this materialistic driven culture, and R & B simply lacks people who can sing without a studio! So, my iPod is always with me to keep me in sync with sounds that have substance! I am also introducing my son (Nicolas) to a sounds that are timeless: Jazz, Hip Hop, and Worship Music...
